The Dark Knight Rises installs as 2012 second movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Dark Knight Rises" has now taken $732million (£467million) worldwide compared to the animated sequel's $716 million (£457million).

Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" has installed as the 2012's second highest-grossing film. On Sunday (August 5), the final chapter of Batman trilogy overtook the global total of the year's previous Number Two movie, Ice Age: Continental Drift. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The Dark Knight Rises" has now taken $732million (£467million) worldwide compared to the animated sequel's $716 million (£457million).

However, the Batman sequel is still a long way off the Number One spot. Since its release in May, The Avengers has taken $1.46billion (£930million) at the worldwide box office, making it the third highest-grossing film ever.

It also remains behind the previous instalment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, which grossed a shade over $1billion (£640million) in 2008. At present, The Dark Knight Rises is grossing slower than its predecessor in the US, but compensating for the shortfall in international markets.

When asked on Sunday (August 5) whether the film's US performance had been affected by the Colorado shootings, Warner Bros. executive Jeff Goldstein said: "There's no doubt about it." However, he also predicted that The Dark Knight Rises will outperform its predecessor worldwide and ultimately gross "way over $1billion".

President Barack Obama recently revealed that he has seen The Dark Knight Rises and singled out singled out star Anne Hathaway for praise. "I got a chance to see Batman, and she was the best thing in it. That's just my personal opinion," he said at a fundraising dinner yesterday (August 5).
