Roger Federer wins third time at Madrid Mutua Open defeating Tomas Berdych
He came back from losing the first set to defeat the big-hitting Czech in a match where small details and perhaps Federer's calmness under pressure decided the title.
Roger Federer defeated Tomas Berdych in a hard match 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in a hard match at Madrid's Mutua Open. Federer won Madrid Open for the third time but the winning wasn't easy at all. He came back from losing the first set to defeat the big-hitting Czech in a match where small details and perhaps Federer's calmness under pressure decided the title.
"It is amazing to win here again," said Federer, who will overtake Nadal as the second-ranked player behind Djokovic. "It has been a tough tournament. Tough to move, but you've got to try to make the most of it. Here there was some good tennis and some bad tennis, but you see that in all tournaments."
Berdych had beaten Federer in Wimbledon in 2010 and on the fast blue clay in Madrid, he began confidently breaking Federer in the second game and racing into a 3-0 lead and looking strong all through the set in which Federer was on the defensive.
The third seed saved a set point in the eighth game, but Berdych served out to take the set. The second set saw Federer compose himself and it was his turn to break in the second game and race into a 5-2 lead, before Berdych won three consecutive games, breaking Federer in the ninth.
It looked set for a tiebreak, but Federer took another break as Berdych double faulted on the decisive point and then held his serve to level the match at onset each. Both players began the decisive set confidently holding their serves, but Berdych pressured Federer into conceding a break point in the third game, although Federer defended well to hold his serve.
After holding his serve, Berdych again pressured Federer in the fifth game, but again failed to break through. The match looked as if it was decided in the eighth game as Berdych allowed Federer to race into a 0-40 lead only to level with three aces. However, Federer won the next point and achieved the break when Berdych again double faulted at a key moment.
That left Federer to serve for the match, but it was Berdych's turn to break and then hold his serve to make it 5-5 in the final set. Federer held his serve and two errors from Berdych gave him three match points in the final game. Berdych saved them all, but another error saw him hit a forehand into the net giving Federer his third title in Madrid, while the triumph also lifts him up to second place in the world rankings.
