Picture of the week: actor George Clooney arrested in DC during protest

Actor George Clooney gave media the picture of the week as he along with his father were arrested on Friday afternoon, March 16th while taking part at a protest in front of Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C. . Despite admitted he felt embarrassed of being handcuffed, he says it was fine because this way he could "put the spotlight on the crisis." Right before his arrest in front of Sudanese embassy in Washington D.C., George Clooney stated it clear that he knew he was "standing on the right side of history".

Clooney's publicist, Stan Rosenfield, told tmz.com that the protest was to demand that Sudan allow "humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world." The actor, accompanied by a number of political figures as well as his father, Nick has been fighting for the Darfur crisis for years, getting himself handcuffed this time in a protest against the starvation movement made by the government.

Clooney has been outspoken in recent years about violence in the African nation and recently shot a documentary to raise awareness. He was charged with crossing a police line and released on $100 bail.

"I'll stand together here with my father, so that at one moment in time when you people ask you where were you, where did you stand I want to say I'm standing on the right side of history," the actor told NBC's Andrea Mitchell before police escorted him away. He and the rest of the protesters were placed in the back of a Secret Service van.

Later after the arrest had been made, the actor released a statement via his rep, saying, "They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children. They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world."

Clooney added, "I'm just trying to raise attention. Let your Congress know, let your president know. It's actually a humiliating thing to be arrested no matter what you do, but I'm glad to be standing here with my father."

On Wednesday night, March 14th Clooney was invited by President Barack Obama to take part at a dinner at the White House in honor of David Cameron.
