5.3 Magnitude earthquake hits Dominican Republic on Thursday morning
A moderate tremor was felt 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the Dominican Republic city of San Jose de Ocoa on Thursday morning, January 5th at around 5:35 am local time. According to United States Geological Survey, the magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km) and lasted 30 seconds.
There were no immediate reports of damage, comparing the damages that the earthquake that hit in 2010 capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. The 7.5 magnitude earthquake devastated the capital by killing more than 316,000 people.
Eugenio Polanco, director of the Santo Domingo State University UASD Institute of Seismology stressed that there’s no possibility of a tsunami, as the social media report.
