Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was born to actor R. Sarath Kumar and his first wife, Chaya, on March 5, 1985 in Chennai, India. She also has a younger biological sister named Pooja, as well as a half-brother, Rahul, born to her father and his present wife, actress Raadhika Sarathkumar. After attending St. Michael's Academy School in Chennai, Varalaxmi studied at Hindustan College affiliated to Madras University, earning a degree in microbiology. She also earned a Masters degree in Management at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, graduating in 2007.
