Ty Herndon was born and raised in Butler, Ala. He grew up with a background of family singing, both at home and in church. He went to Nashville to seek his fortune, performing at Opryland theme park sporadically throughout the 1980s and he attended Belmont University on scholarship.
Herndon left Nashville to make a name for himself on the Texas club circuit, and in 1993, he was named Texas entertainer of the year. He signed to Epic Records shortly afterward and his first single, "What Mattered Most," reached No. 1 in 1995. However, that summer, he was busted for possession in a park in Fort Worth, Texas. The incident did not destroy his career, though, as "Living in a Moment" reached No. 1 in 1996. Two years later, "It Must Be Love" also topped the charts.
However, the 1999 album Steam didn't meet commercial expectations and he left Epic following a Greatest Hits volume in 2002. A Christmas album appeared on an independent label in 2003. He released Right About Now in 2007.
On June 8, 2010, Herndon released an album of self-penned Contemporary Christian songs called Journey On. The music video for the title track documents the battle of former National Football League player Kevin Turner with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Herndon is also working on a country music CD.
Herndon has received a Grammy award nomination in the Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Album category for Journey On. Winners will be announced on February 13, 2011. Herndon received a Dove award in 2010 for Best Bluegrass Recorded Song for When We Fly.
