Shari Watson was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a family with a deep connection to the world of music. Her father, a concert promoter, introduced her to legendary acts like the Pointer Sisters and Phyllis Hyman, igniting a spark within her for singing. Recognizing her daughter's talent, Truth's mother enrolled her in singing lessons, setting the stage for what would become an extraordinary career.

The Musical Odyssey Begins

As she entered her teenage years, Truth found herself singing in St. Louis clubs with a band called Mystic Voyage, thanks to the support of a cousin. This early exposure to performing on stage would prove invaluable in shaping her future.

Facing Adversity

After high school, Truth faced a pivotal moment when she turned down an opera scholarship to the University of Chicago to pursue a career in popular music. Together with a friend, she formed the R&B duo Shug & Dap, releasing a single called "Anotha Man" in the early 1990s. Although their potential was evident, the duo's dreams were briefly dashed when their label, Giant Records, went out of business.

Undeterred, Truth persevered, establishing herself as a songwriter for various artists, including Mario Winans, Monifah, and Shanice. Yet, the desire to return to her own singing career remained deeply embedded within her.

The Dr. Dre Connection

In a twist of fate, Truth's path crossed with rap legend Dr. Dre, who offered her an opportunity to cut a solo album. After some contemplation, she accepted the offer, marking the beginning of her solo career. Under the guidance of Dr. Dre and producer DJ Quik, Truth released her debut album, "Truthfully Speaking," in 2002.

The Rise and Fall

With "Truthfully Speaking," Truth Hurts achieved significant success, led by the hit single "Addictive." The album reached the number five position on national sales charts, garnering widespread attention. However, a copyright dispute over the unauthorized use of a sample in "Addictive" led to legal troubles and the album's removal from stores. This setback led to a parting of ways between Truth and her label, Aftermath.

A Fresh Start

Undaunted by adversity, Truth regrouped, signing with Pookie Entertainment for her sophomore album, "Ready Now." With a new name, "Truth," and a fresh perspective, she aimed to showcase her resilience and determination. The album, released in 2004, marked a reinvention of her musical identity, highlighting her powerful gospel-inspired vocals.

Legacy and Ongoing Journey

Despite mixed critical reception, Truth Hurts remains steadfast in her mission to inspire and heal through her music. Her story serves as a testament to the enduring power of passion and talent in the face of adversity.

In 2004, she returned with "Ready Now" and continued to collaborate with fellow artists, including the late J Dilla on "Ghetto Love" in 2005, shortly before his death in February 2006.
