Cook grew up in Robertsdale, Alabama. His father was a worker in the shipbuilding and his mother a homemaker. Cook graduated with a bachelor's degree (BS) in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University in 1982, and later a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in 1988.
He began his career working at IBM known for 12 years, most recently as Director of North American Fulfillment. He later worked as Chief Operating Officer Distribution Division at Intelligent Electronics and then joined as Corporate Materials Vicerpresidente for the computer company Compaq, where he spent six months until he was hired by Steve Jobs to join Apple.
With his arrival at Apple, in March 1998, serving as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations, made a cut in the production line, closing many of its factories in the world. This will cut storage costs and production in the production chain, dramatically increasing profit margins.
Between 2000 and 2002, Cook began to serve as Senior Vice President for Worldwide Operations, Sales, Service and Aftermarket. From 2002 to 2005, Timothy Cook served in positions of Executive Vice President of International Sales and Operations. Including from 2004, his responsibilities in the Macintosh hardware engineering.
In 2004 he acted as CEO at Apple for two months, when its chief executive, Steve Jobs was recovering from surgery to cure pancreatic cancer. This is repeated when in January 14, 2009, they announced that Cook would replace Steve Jobs as Apple CEO until June 2009, during his absence due to medical treatment.
Cook is also on the board of the sportswear company Nike. With the resignation of Steve Jobs at the head of Apple, from August 24, 2011 assumes the position of CEO.
Cook is a fitness enthusiast and enjoys hiking, cycling, and going to the gym. He regularly begins sending emails at 4:30 am and used to hold Sunday night staff meetings by telephone to prepare for the next week.
While giving the 2010 commencement speech at Auburn University, Cook emphasized the importance of intuition in guiding his life's biggest choices, and followed by stating that preparation and hard work are also necessary to execute on that intuition.
