Actor Sivakumar’s son Surya was born on the 23rd July 1975 in Chennai. He was named Saravanan Sivakumar but known famously as just Surya. Karthik Sivakumar is Surya’s younger brother and an award winning actor. He also has a younger sister Brinda married to an industrialist.

Surya pursued his education in Chennai at the St.Bedes School and then at the Loyola College where he studied Commerce along with Joseph Vijay who is a Tamil actor. He worked in the garment industry before moving into movies.

Jyothika, Surya’s wife is also an actress who has worked with him Kaakha Kaakha and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. They were married in 2006 and had a daughter Diya in 2007.

He has worked for ads like Pepsi, TVS, Sunfeast Biscuits, Emami Fair & Handsome and Himani Navratna Oil.

1997 to 2002 Surya made a good start with his debut Nerrukku Ner in 1997 with Vijay and Simran. He acted in movies like Kaadhale Nimmadhi (1998), Periyanna (1999) and Uyirile Kalanthathu (2000). Friends and Nandha in 2001 both performed extremely well and Surya won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor for Nandha. In 2002 Unnai Ninaithu and Maunam Pesiyadhe were moderate successes.

2003 to 2007 Gautham Menon’s Kaakha Kaakha (2003) in which he starred with Jyothika was a huge hit as were Pithamagan (2003) and Perazhagan (2004). While he won the Filmfare Best Tamil Supporting Actor Award for Pithamagan, he bagged the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Perazhagan. In Mani Rathnam’s Ayitha Ezhuthu (2004) he played a student leader Michael. The movie was made into Yuva in Hindi and this role was played by Ajay Devgan.

He had a blockbuster in 2005 with Ghajini which also starred Asin and he followed this with a successful Aaru opposite Trisha Krishnan the same year. Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (2006) brought him together onscreen with his wife Jyothika and was an average grosser. He had only one release in 2007 Vel with Asin that became a hit.

2008 to 2009 In 2008, Surya produced, wrote and starred in a five minute documentary called Herova? Zerova? with Jyothika, Vijay and Madhavan. It was to help spread awareness about the importance of education. Gautham Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram with Simran Bagga also enjoyed success.
