Born in Chieti on 17/6/1952, emigrated to Canada as a child where he completed his studies and obtained his law degree (Bachelor of Law) at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University in Toronto. He holds a Degree in Business (Bachelor of Commerce) at the University of Windsor, Windsor in Canada and a Master of Business Administration from the University. It ‘also a graduate in Arts (BA), major in Philosophy and Economics as other topics, at the University of Toronto.
E ‘married with two children and has dual citizenship, Canadian and Italian.
Canada was the country where the manager has also made his first professional experiences, from 1983 to 1985, just as in the accountant and tax expert at Deloitte Touche. From 1985 to 1988 Marchionne was the group controller and then Director of Corporate Development at Lawson Mardon Group in Toronto, and between 1989 and 1990, executive vice president of Glenex Industries. Then, until 1992, vice president for Finance and Chief Financial Officer at Acklands Limited. Also in Toronto, in the period between 1992 and 1994 he served in the order, the office of vice president for legal and corporate development, chief financial officer and secretary of the Lawson Group, acquired by Alusuisse Lonza in 1994. The same Algroup of Zurich, Switzerland, where from 1994 to 2000 was then executive vice president of corporate development, chief financial officer and then CEO.
He later headed the Lonza Group Ltd, having been separated from Alusuisse Lonza, in his capacity as manager from 2000-2001 and part of 2002, the first, and then president (2002). Since May 2002, Marchionne is part of the board of the biotechnology group Serono Geneva.
Director of Fiat S.p.A. Since May 2003, Chief Executive Officer of the Company on 1 June 2004. Since February 2005 is also the CEO of Fiat Auto.
Since 2006 he is Chairman of CNH (Fiat Group company that operates in the agricultural machinery and construction). Since March 2005 the President of the Bank Credit Union.
E ‘permanent member of the Giovanni Agnelli Foundation, and serves on the Board of Directors Assonime (Association of Italian corporations).
Since January 2006, is president of the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association).
In June 2009, when Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Fiat Group received a 20% stake in Chrysler Group LLC and Marchionne was appointed CEO, replacing existing CEO Robert Nardelli. In July 2011, following the purchase of the ownership interests held by Canada and the US Treasury, Fiat’s stake in Chrysler increased to 53.5% and in September 2011, due to his success, Marchionne was also elected Chairman of Chrysler.
