In the mid-to-late nineties, Scott Adams and those around him designed and developed a specialized line of coffee mugs, baseball caps, cell phone covers, sweatshirts, boxer shorts, suspenders, silk ties, and mouse pads bearing the likeness of a fictitious character named Dilbert. Many of the mugs were digitally machine printed in full four-process color on white semi-glazed ceramic -- perfect for Swiss Miss hot chocolate, office coffee or cafeteria tea. Mouse pads were bundled with "cling sticker" value packs: ten reusable easy-peel stickers of Dilbert's blank, emotionless face so children and adults could create their own unique designs. By special arrangement between Dilbert.com and United Feature Syndicate, Inc., "The Dilbert Zone" was created: one of the first web sites in history to turn a profit. Orders for merchandise (internally referred to as Dilberphernalia) were processed and shipped through CafePress, and Dilbert became one of the biggest character-licensing phenomenons of all time. One of Adams' well-known quotes: "You can never underestimate the stupidity of the general public."
Adams then started a sideline gig delivering humorous lectures around the western United States, and soon he became one of the most popular and highly compensated public speakers in America. Running around from lecture to lecture, dispensing wisdom from city to city was such serious business that Adams rarely had time to grab a snack during his twelve-hour work day. He teamed up with food industry veteran Jack Parker to find a solution. Adams declared himself chief executive officer of Scott Adams Foods, Inc. -- a company he personally funded to create and market convenient, hand-held microwaveable foodstuffs. By massaging the word Dilbert into the word burrito, Adams devised the moniker Dilberito, a trusted brand name now available in your grocer's freezer.
Like the coffee mugs and mousepads, outer packaging for Dilberito snacks and treats contain a picture of the fictitious Dilbert character posed in a funny way, usually with his arms outstretched. Just beyond the crinkly wrapping, customers enjoy authentic fajita flavor with just the right amount of "heat" for a lightweight fan of California-style Mexican food. This south of the border hand-held meal is accompanied by a 1 oz. packet of Scott's favorite salsa -- with vegetarian and vegan varieties available too! Adams calls these concepts a form of enlightened capitalism. The Dilberito joined hundreds of other so-called nutraceuticals or "functional foods" during a brief trend in the U.S. food industry. "It's just three minutes in the microwave, it's hand held, it works with a busy lifestyle," Adams said. "We plan to change the world one Dilberito at a time."
