Sasha Grey was born in North Highlands, California and grew up in a working-class family in Sacramento, California. Her parents divorced before Grey finished middle school, and her mother remarried in 2000 when Grey was 12. She attended four high schools before graduating from Highlands High in North Highlands, California, class of 2005. In autumn 2005, she attended junior college and took classes in film, dance, and acting. She waited tables at a steak house through March 2006 and saved $7,000 for a move to Los Angeles.
She moved to Los Angeles and started her career in the spring of 2006 just after turning 18. Grey contacted casting agent Mark Spiegler through the Internet and he agreed to represent her. Her first scene was an orgy with Rocco Siffredi and others for the movie The Fashionistas 2 by John Stagliano. During this scene, she shocked her fellow performers by requesting that Siffredi punch her in the stomach.
Grey was featured in the November 2006 edition of Los Angeles magazine, which flagged her as a potential major star, perhaps the next Jenna Jameson. In December 2006, Sasha was interviewed on the syndicated entertainment industry news show The Insider. In 2007 she won two AVN awards, one for Best Three-Way Sex scene in Fuck Slaves and the second for Best Group Sex scene in Fashionistas Safado: The Challenge. She was also nominated as Best New Starlet, but lost to Naomi Russell. In May of 2007, she was the recipient of the best new Starlet award by the X Rated Critics Organization. In 2008 she became the youngest person to win the AVN Female Performer of the Year award.
Grey also appeared on The Tyra Banks Show in February 2007. She later claimed through her own website and on YouTube that the interview aired on television represented her poorly and that the show's staff changed her clothing and hairstyle to make her appear younger, her youthful appearance being a feature that host Tyra Banks repeatedly played on in criticism of her pornographic career choice.
She was chosen as Penthouse Magazine's Penthouse Pet of The Month for July 2007; the spread is considered to be a radical change for the magazine as it was photographed by the fashion photographer Terry Richardson. Sasha was featured as part of the art work for The Smashing Pumpkins 2007 album Zeitgeist and appears in their music video "Superchrist". Grey also starred in the music video for the song "Birthday Girl" by the Roots. Sasha stars in and suggested the title for the movie Broken (2007), directed by Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. She has modeled for American Apparel and Richard Kern as a part of Vice magazine's anti-fashion layout and appeared in a three part VBS program, "Shot by Kern".
Sasha is half of the experimental music/art project known as ATelecine, along with Pablo St. Francis. She has publicly expressed her strong interest in existentialism and posed the question on adultdvdtalk.com an online adult forum "how many porn-stars are existentialist"? Grey also aspires to produce independent films; since the inception of her career in the porn industry, she has begun the filming of a documentary that she hopes will illustrate her experience from the age of 18 to 21.
Before deciding on her present stage name she was toying with the name of Jean-Luc Godard's ex-wife Anna Karina. She eventually chose "Sasha" from Sascha Konietzko of the band KMFDM, and "Grey" from the Kinsey scale of sexuality. That scale says that heterosexuality and homosexuality are black and white, and everything in between is grey. Sasha considers herself to be very much in that grey area. She states that she is bisexual and a fan of porn star Belladonna, with whom she shot scenes in Fetish Fanatic #4 and the unreleased Awakening of Sasha Grey.
In a May 2009 interview in Rolling Stone magazine, Grey said she had her first sexual experience at the age of 16 and has had six sexual partners off screen, as opposed to more than 50 on screen. Sasha is engaged to her photographer Ian Cinnamon, whom she currently lives with.
Director Steven Soderbergh cast her as the lead actress for his film The Girlfriend Experience (2009) that tells the story of a $2,000 per hour call girl.
On April 11th, 2011, Sasha Grey announced her retirement from performing in the adult film industry.
She recently appeared in rapper Eminem's music video 'Space Bound'.
