Roja Selvamani life and biography

Roja Selvamani is a veteran south Indian actress and politician.

Roja was born in 1972 in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. She learnt Kuchipudi, a dance form, for a few years. She has two brothers Kumaraswamy Reddy and Ramprasad Reddy.

Roja entered the cinema industry from Telugu films. Her first movie was Prema thapassu with acting legend Rajendra prasad where the complete movie was shooted in Tirupati itself. She was first introduced in the Tamil film by director R.K. Selvamani in his film Chembaruthi paired with actor Prashanth. The movie was a hit and paved the way for her in the Tamil cinema industry. She became popular with her songs such as Veloor Maman in the film Makkal Aatchi with Mammootty and Mastana Mastana in Rasaiyya with Prabhu Deva. She became popular acting in films with actors such as Rajnikanth in Veera, and Arjun Sarja in Ayudha Poojai. Roja's career breakthrough was in the film Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen, directed by Vikraman. Roja's 100th movie was Pottu Amman. Roja appeared in supporting roles in Arasu (2001) and in Parijaatham (2006).

Roja and Meena resembled each other when younger, and Meena acted as Roja's younger sister in several movies.Roja had a penchant for hairdressing and it was evidently seen as whenever she is in the sets, she's seen hairdressing her co-heroines like Devayani, Kushboo, Ranjitha, Mumtaz to name a few. According to Ramya Krishnan, her friend and co-star, Roja is one of the few artists who can do they make-up themselves. Actress Mumtaz in an interview has praised Roja's willingness and egoless attitude when Roja did her hair andmake-up during a Singapore Film show in 2003.

Roja joined Telugu Desam and was the woman wing president of Telugu Mahila. During the 2009 state elections and was involved in confrontations and political antics with her rival opposition party leaders, which ultimately led to her defeat for the second consecutive time in the AP state Assembly elections. In August 2009, She quit TDP and joined Congress Party. She quit Congress party and is presently with Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy's political movement.

Roja is married to the director R. K. Selvamani, the director of her first Tamil movie. Roja is a very friendly co-star and a hobby costume designer cum hairstylist. She helps her co-stars with their hair make up during shoots. Her very close friend and co-star actress Meena has mentioned in an interview that Roja is like her elder sister and has been a mentor in people relationship.
