Born Rhiannon Afua Benson in Accra, Ghana to a British mother and Ghanaian father she moved to United Kingdom when still young, where she began playing piano and guitar and writing songs and poetry. Before pursuing a career in music, she attended the London School of Economics and gained a degree in econometrics. She continued her education at Harvard University.
She began seriously to perform her smooth, jazzy soul songs in small clubs in London after college. And eventually Benson was signed and released her first album, Gold Coast, in 2003 for each she won a Mobo Award in 2005. Rhian Benson has begun preparing for the release of her second album on February 14, 2011 - Hands Clean, Better Without You is the first single to be released off the album. Rhian is set to perform after 8 years hiatus in London's Jazz Cafe on November 14th.
