He was born March 30, 1957 in New York City. The son of a health-food chain owner, Reiser attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City and the University of New York at Binghamton where he graduated with a degree in piano and composition in 1977.
After graduation, Reiser became a regular on the comedy club circuit, and his big break came when he landed a starring role in Barry Levinson's Diner. He subsequently appeared in various other comedic films before co-creating and co-producing the hit sitcom Mad About You in 1992. Portraying the daily goings-on of a loving and utterly human Manhattan couple (played by Reiser and Helen Hunt), the series ran until 1999 and was honored with a Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy Series. Reiser also co-wrote the Mad About You theme song, Final Frontier.
Previously, Reiser starred in the short-lived series My Two Dads in 1987, as well as wrote, produced and starred in the 1988 HBO special Paul Reiser: Out on a Whim. He is also the author of the best-selling book Couplehood.
Reiser married psychotherapist Paula Ravets in 1988. They have one son, Ezra Samuel Reiser.
Reiser will write and star in the upcoming semi-autobiographical comedy series The Paul Reiser Show, set to air on NBC as a midseason replacement during the 2010-11 television season. "This is nice", quipped Reiser on the Stephanie Miller radio program, "because you get to sit around and root for other shows to fail."
