Otis Smith born October 22, 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana is a retired American football cornerback, and currently an assistant coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Otis Smith's Career


Otis Smith enters his first season as Kansas City’s defensive quality control coach after spending a portion of the 2009 season working with the Chiefs defensive backs. Smith comes to the Chiefs after serving as the assistant secondary coach with Philadelphia in 2008. He also served NFL Minority Coaching Fellowships with Philadelphia (2007) and New England (2006).

Philadelphia led the NFC and ranked third in the NFL, allowing 182.1 passing yards per game in 2008. Smith was instrumental in helping the Eagles record 15 interceptions, including two that were returned for TDs.

Smith owns a vast knowledge of the cornerback position, owning 13 seasons in the NFL experience as a player. He saw duty in 180 regular season games (108 starts) with Philadelphia (’90-94), the N.Y. Jets (’95-96, ’97-99), New England (’96, 2000-02) and Detroit (2003). He concluded his career with 525 tackles (418 solo), 5.5 sacks (-30.5 yards), 29 INTs for 645 yards with seven TDs, 106 passes defensed and 82 special teams tackles. His seven INT returns for TDs are tied for the eighth-highest total in NFL history. He originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia in ’90.

The New Orleans, Louisiana native also played in 10 postseason contests (eight starts). He appeared in two Super Bowls with New England, earning a Super Bowl XXXVI ring with the Patriots. He recorded 36 tackles (30 solo), a sack, two INTs, 10 passes defensed, a fumble recovery for a 47-yard TD and two special teams tackles in the postseason.

Smith was a two-year starter at Missouri after spending two seasons at Taft Junior College in Taft, California. He originally began his collegiate career playing basketball for one season at Southern University. Smith earned all-state honors in football as a senior at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana.
