Michael Iupati life and biography

Mike Iupati, a hard-nosed guard out of Idaho, brings attitude and toughness to the 49ers. Known for his rare combination of size and athleticism, Iupati will look to compete for a starting role along the team’s offensive line.

Originally the second of two first-round (17th overall) draft choices by SF in 2010.

COLLEGE:
•A three-year starter, played in 35 games with 33 starts in his career. Started all 13 games at left guard as a senior and became just the second non-BCS player to be named a finalist for the Outland Trophy since the award’s inception in 1946 (Willie Roaf, Lousiana Tech - 1992). Also earned All-American first-team honors by the NFL Draft Report, Walter Camp Football Foundation, The American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers of America, Associated Press and Sports Illustrated. In addition, was named first-team WAC and was the only active member to be named to the WAC’s All-Decade team. Helped lead the Vandals to their first winning season since 1999 and paved the way for an offense that ranked 9th in the nation in total offense (451.4 ypg). As a junior, started the final eight games at left guard on his way to earning ALLWAC first-team honors by the NFL Draft Report. Started all 12 games at left guard as a sophomore in 2007 after serving in a reserve role as a freshman.

PERSONAL:
•Attended Western (Anaheim, CA) HS, where he was a captain and played on both sides of the ball, receiving all-state and all-conference honors as a senior.
•Competed on the school’s wrestling and track teams.
•Young brother, Andrew, is a defensive tackle for the University of Oregon.
•His family moved to the United States when Mike was 14, moving in with relatives in Garden Grove, CA.
•Was a high school teammate of DT Fili Moala, who was selected in the 2nd round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
