In his freshman season at North Carolina (2004-05), Williams provided key frontcourt depth off the bench in helping the Tar Heels claim the 2005 NCAA title
• His tip-in with 1:26 remaining in the NCAA final vs. Illinois broke a 70-70 tie, propelling UNC to a 75-70 victory
• Williams earned ACC Rookie of the Year honors and was a unanimous selection to the ACC All-Freshman Team
• In addition, he was named Honorable Mention All-ACC
• On the season, Williams averaged 11.3 points and was 2nd on the team with 6.6 rebounds per game, and among conference leaders, he finished fourth in free throw percentage (.847) and 10th in rebounding

• Williams shot .506 from the field and .432 from three-point range
• During UNC's tournament wins (six games), he averaged 12.0 points and 7.3 rebounds, including 20 points vs. Oakland, and 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Iowa State.
