Kunal Kapoor was born in a family, which was into construction business. He did his schooling in Mumbai and opted for the pre university college. Later he did his graduation in commerce and then a course in export management. Kunal never dreamt to be an actor; rather he is not a person who makes plans, but loves to venture on anything that excites him that moment. For instance, as a child he wanted to be an architect but by the time he had reached his 12th grade, he gave it up and made an entry into a Construction Company. He even dabbled into stock market, export firm and textile unit. He spent 5 to 6 years of his life after college trying 30 different professions, where he was pampered and served everything in a platter. Indeed he was not a person with a focus or a dream, but yes his fortune of fame had not yet called him to mount the peak of glamor world. The call for acting proved far stronger, and Kunal found himself moving on.
Kunal ventured into ad films after trying all his interests. He did a couple of ads with Rakeysh Mehra who was searching a man with a beard for his advertisement. He did a screen shot and his first ad was shot on Coke. After experiencing the energy, Kunal assisted him in 'Aks' as an assistant director in 2001. During the course of the movie he often initiated for any background acting. So, his first debut in the field of acting in films was on the background of Aks. During the making of Aks Kunal and Manoj Bajpai became friends and he then asked Kunal to meet Barry John if he aimed to be an actor. So the dreamer finally decided to step into the world of acting and moved to Delhi to learn acting skills. He did theatre with Barry John for a couple of years. He took acting from 'on the stage' to the 'movie screen'.
The resulting popularity saw him in ads like Indian Terrain and Thums Up. Kunal finally got a break through into Bollywood as an actor starring opposite Tabu in 'Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities' (2004). The movie was directed by the one of the finest Indian artist's has produced, M. F. Hussain. The film didn't do that well at the box office as it was too artistic and had a very novel way of storytelling. But Kunal did get noticed for his work. Rakeysh Mehra then cast him in a role that would change Kunal's film career for good. Kunal Kapoor starred in 'Rang De Basanti', a role which brought him into prominence. The film was critically and commercially successful, and it was India's official entry to the Oscars and the Bafta's. Kapoor's performance was acclaimed and he received a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award nomination.
Since Rang De Basanti Kunal has yet to strike gold at the box office, his other releases all bombed at the box office, including Yashraj banner movies, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Aaja Nachle. He has also done a cameo in Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno. The movie released on the 15th of August 2008. In the same year, Kunal Kapoor also appeared in Welcome to Sajjanpur, which released on 19th of September 2008. He already has his upcoming movie Lamhaa in place which is based on the genre of action and drama.
Kunal Kapoor has indeed proved to be a brand because of his cool, casual, philosophical and creative personality.
The tall dusky character with unkempt hair and beard is always referred to as a dreamer. He is definitely not the regular guy next door, unless you really get lucky. His journey has been slow but steady and has a lot of promise in him.
