Bitten by the acting bug early in life soon after her schooling, Kovai Sarala born Saralakumari made her debut in the film Mundanai Mudichu, through director K. Bhagyaraj whom she happened to know. Be it speaking the Coimbatore or the Madurai dialect or taking on a handful of local rowdies, she does it with élan. In the beginning, she was only doing comedy tracks - nothing big or great. But all the films I featured in became super hits. Chinna Veedu also directed by K. Bhagyaraj was his second film. Then films followed such as Japaanil Kalyanaraman and Vaidehi Kaathirunthal. With Udaya Geetham and Pondaatti Sonna Kettukanum the remakes of which gave her a break in the Telugu and Kannada industry, she graduated from comedy to character roles with a comic streak. Her brand of dialogue delivery won her many admirers. Till not long ago, she formed impressive partnerships with the likes of Vivek, Vadivelu and other front-ranking male comedy artistes. Sathi Leelavathi was a landmark in her career. Directed by Balu Mahendra, the film had Kamal Hasan in the lead and Sarala playing his wife. She never dreamt of landing such a role with this wonderful actor. After Manorama and Sachhu, Kovai Sarala was the most-accepted comedy actress. She has acted in notable films like Karagaattakkaaran, Kunti Puthrudu, Akkada Abbai Ikkada Ammayi and more. With 500 films in the four South Indian languages to her credit and having worked with almost all the leading comedians of her time, she has carved a niche for herself in the world of comedy. She avoids imitating the style of other actors and has a unique slot for herself. Her flair for the regional dialect came in handy and helped her reach out to a large audience. She is one of the talented actresses who can fit into any role and entertain the audience.
