Justin Rose: From Struggles to Major Wins and Olympic Gold
Justin Peter Rose, MBE (born 30 July 1980) is an English professional golfer known for his accomplishments on both the European Tour and PGA Tour. Rose gained significant media attention as an amateur, finishing fourth at the 1998 Open Championship. He turned professional the next day but initially struggled, making few cuts. Rose's career picked up in the early 2000s, winning his first European Tour title in 2002 and leading the tour's Order of Merit in 2007. He shifted focus to the U.S., winning several notable tournaments, including the 2013 U.S. Open. Rose earned a gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, was runner-up at the 2017 Masters, and reached world number one in 2018.
Early Life
Rose was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to English parents Annie and Ken Rose. The family moved to England when Rose was five, where he began playing golf at Tylney Park Golf Club. He later played at Southwood, Hartley Wintney, and North Hants Golf Clubs. Rose broke 70 for the first time at age 11 and was a plus three handicap by 14.
Amateur Career
Rose played in the 1997 Walker Cup at age 17. He gained worldwide prominence at the 1998 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, finishing tied for fourth and winning the silver medal as the low amateur.
Professional Career
Early Struggles
After turning professional post-1998 Open Championship, Rose missed the cut in his first 21 consecutive events. He earned his first European Tour card in 1999 but failed to retain it, requiring another visit to qualifying school in 2000.
Career Takeoff
Rose's career improved in 2001 with consecutive second-place finishes in South Africa. In 2002, he won four professional events, including the Dunhill Championship, Nashua Masters, The Crowns Tournament, and the Victor Chandler British Masters. By 2003, he reached number 33 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
PGA Tour Focus
Rose struggled in 2004 but maintained his tour card. In 2005, he focused on the PGA Tour, resulting in inconsistent performance. He returned to form in 2006, finishing second at the Valero Texas Open and winning the Australian Masters. By 2007, Rose achieved consistent top finishes, won the European Tour Order of Merit, and reached number 7 in the world rankings.
Major Wins and Olympic Gold
In 2010, Rose won the Memorial Tournament and AT&T National. He won the 2012 WGC-Cadillac Championship and performed well in the 2012 Ryder Cup. Rose won the 2013 U.S. Open, becoming the first Englishman since 1970 to do so. He continued his success with victories at the Quicken Loans National and Scottish Open in 2014. Rose finished runner-up at the 2015 Masters and won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. In 2016, he won the Olympic gold medal in Rio de Janeiro.
Continued Success and World Number One
Rose co-led the 2017 Masters but lost in a playoff. He won the WGC-HSBC Champions and other events in 2017. Rose hosted the 2018 British Masters and won the Fort Worth Invitational. His consistent performances in 2018 led to him winning the FedEx Cup and returning to World Number One.
