Jule Charney calculated the equations of motion for the atmosphere, and developed early mathematical formulae for numerical meteorology (computerized weather forecasting). He is the namesake of an award presented annually since 1969 by the American Meteorological Society to recognize "highly significant research or development achievement in the atmospheric or hydrologic sciences". He was a childhood friend of violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin. His son, Nicholas Charney, was the founding publisher of Psychology Today.
