The youngest of four children, Altidore was born in Livingston, New Jersey and raised in Boca Raton, Florida. His parents, Joseph and Giselle, were both born in Haiti (Altidore pays tribute to his heritage by wearing a wristband bearing both the flags of Haiti and the United States during his games). Growing up, he played club soccer for GBYSA and Boca Juniors Soccer Club. As a high schooler, he attended Boca Prep before joining the U.S. U-17 Residency program.
The leading scorer in USA's 2010 World Cup qualifying push with six goals from 13 appearances, his hat-trick against Trinidad and Tobago in April 2009 was a real highlight on the road to South Africa. If he can repeat that sort of form this summer, hero status will be assured when he returns home.
A speedy and powerful attacking talent, Altidore made his name with New York Red Bulls before trying his luck in Spain's La Liga with Villarreal. However, he has struggled to make his mark in their first team and spent last season on loan at Hull City. Their relegation from the Premier League meant his stay in England proved less than enjoyable.
The son of Haitian parents, he played a role in promoting fund-raising efforts after the earthquake that rocked the Caribbean country earlier this year.
