A giant and commanding back-up keeper who is a cousin of first-choice Slovenian stopper Samir Handanovic, he has just completed his third season in the Italian second division with Mantova, having previously played in his homeland for Olimpia Ljubljana, Triglav Kranj and FC Koper.
He has a knack for saving spot kicks and not surprisingly given his height, he is particularly strong coming for crosses. However, his lack of regular top level action must be a concern for Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek, who will be hoping his back-up custodian has little more that a watching brief to fulfil in South Africa this summer.
Handanovic is the first Mantova player to go to a World Cup in nearly a half-century. The last to do so were the Italians Angelo Sormani and Anton Alleman, who took part in the 1962 finals in Chile.
