Atkins rose from his tough, drug-riddled neighborhood in Queens to become known as the rapper and hip hop star Ja Rule, which stands for Jeffery Atkins Represents Unconditional Love Exists. Under Irv Gotti’s Murder Inc. label, Ja Rule became a huge sensation, releasing Venni Vetti Vecci in 1999, Rule 3:36 in 2000 and The Last Temptation in 2003. His hardcore rap lyrics were often juxtaposed with melodic female backup voices such as Ashanti and Jennifer Lopez, creating a chart-topping sound.
Ja Rule parlayed his music success into a minor acting career, appearing in such films as The Fast and the Furious. The tough-talking musician has also made headlines for his run-ins with fellow rappers, including DMX and 50 Cent.
