Hayes Carll, raised in a suburb north of Houston, spent several years living in a beach shack in Crystal Beach, Texas, on the Bolivar Peninsula across the bay from Galveston. It was there and in Galveston that Carll honed his act. Like Bolivar, Galveston is also a party-hearty town. The Old Quarter -- set amid downtown Galveston's faded grandeur -- is one of very few bars in the town that doesn't cater to the beach bash set. Carll found the haven one night after his wait-shift ended at a nearby seafood restaurant and soon won over the owner with a couple of his Townes Van Zandt and Bob Dylan covers.
Carll released his debut album, Flowers & Liquor, in 2002 on Compadre Records. He won three awards -- song of the year for "Highway 87," songwriter of the year and best folk -- from the Houston Press alternative paper in 2003. After turning down a multi-album deal from Sugar Hill Records, Carll released Little Rock on his own label in 2005. Lost Highway released Trouble in Mind in 2008.
