A former fashion model, a beauty contest winner, a successful Hollywood actress and an Academy and Golden Globe Award Winner - Halle Berry, as the world knows her. This gorgeous Afro-American actress has faced many tough times in her life before rising to fame and generating a huge fan following. She is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and is presently considering venturing into production. Halle Berry has been dating the French-Canadian model Gabriel Aubry since 2005 and they recently had a lovely baby girl named Nahla Ariela Aubry (March 16th, 2008).

Halle Berry was born Halle Maria Berry on the 14th August, 1968 in Cleveland, Ohio in US. Interestingly, she was named after Halle Building, which was located in that town and housed the Halle Brothers Department Store. Her father was a hospital attendant named Jerome, who later became a bus driver and her mother was a Liverpool born Caucasian nurse, named Judith. She and her elder sister were raised by their mother after her father left when she was a young kid.

Her early childhood was spent in a black neighborhood and later moved to a suburb that white population. Even though her complexion was light, it was not readily accepted. Halle Berry went to Bedford High School and attended Cuyahoga Community College. She did quite well in her studies and was also a popular student. She also took part in many beauty pageants and won Miss Ohio USA in 1986 and Miss USA World. In 1989, while recording the short-lived television series ‘Living Dolls’, Halle Berry suddenly collapsed and went into coma. It was diagnosed by the doctors to be Diabetes Mellitus Type 1.

Halle Berry Profile and Career

She was noticed by many in her movie ‘Jungle Fever’, in which she played the role of a drug addict named Vivian. Next, she portrayed the role of a career woman who falls for Eddie Murphy in the movie Boomerang. It was her role as a headstrong slave in ‘Queen: The Story of an American Family’ that she really made waves and the public took notice of her as a performer. With her role as a former drug addict trying hard to gain custody of her son in the movie ‘Losing Isaiah’, Halle Berry proved she could tackle serious roles with much ease and precision.

She then starred in the Flintstones movie where she plays a seductress. She has performed wonderfully in movies like Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, X-Men Trilogy, Swordfish, Gothika, Die Another Day, etc. but what deserves a special mention is the movie Monster’s Ball, for which she won an Academy Award and became the first African-American woman to win the same. She also played the lead role in the movie Catwoman, for which she won the Worst Actress Award, which she accepted in a lighter vein. She has also been the spokesperson for the cosmetic brand Revlon for a number of years.
