Arguably the most improved player in the Premier League over the last 18 months, Gomes has recovered superbly from a quite horrific start to his career at Tottenham.
Initially, this former Cruzeiro and PSV Eindhoven stopper looked as if he was set to go down in history as one of the worst 'keepers ever to grace the English top flight, with his howling errors on a weekly basis suggesting his stay at White Hart Lane would be painful and brief. However, he has transformed himself into a fine No. 1 this season, with his shot-stopping ability and increasing command of his penalty box helping Spurs to claim a place in next season's Champions League.
Gomes has certainly earned his chance at this World Cup and while he is unlikely to see too much action in South Africa, he is a fine back-up 'keeper for coach Dunga.
