Durst was born August 20, 1970 in Gastonia, North Carolina. After graduating from Hunter Huss High School he moved to suburban Jacksonville, Florida in his late teens. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy to impress his girlfriend and his father, but after he found that Recruit training (Boot camp) was too strenuous for him, he was chaptered out. Upon returning to Jacksonville at age 20, he pursued a career as a tattoo artist. Durst later confessed, "Being in the Navy was like being in prison. I made the biggest mistake of my life."
Fred Durst is the front man for Limp Bizkit, the popular metal-hip hop hybrid band. As the group's vocalist and acknowledged leader, Durst first grabbed attention for his theatrical bad-boy ways, multiple tattoos, and slacker-look goatee and floppy caps. Limp Bizkit was created in 1994 and during its early heyday included Durst, guitarist Wes Borland (b. 7 February 1975), sonic specialist DJ Lethal (b. 18 December 1972), bassist Sam Rivers (b. 2 September 1977), and drummer John Otto (b. 22 March 1977). The group's albums include Three Dollar Bill Y'All$ (1997), Significant Other (1999), the oddly-named Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water (2000), Results May Vary (2003), and The Unquestionable Truth, Pt. 1 (2005). Durst has also dabbled in the movies, acting in the 2005 movie Sorry, Haters and directing the 2007 feature The Education of Charlie Banks.
