Muniz was born on December 5, 1985, in Wood Ridge or Ridgewood, New Jersey, the son of Denise, a former nurse, and Francisco James Múñiz III, a restaurant manager. His father is Puerto Rican and his mother is of Italian and Irish descent. He has an older sister, Christina. Muniz was first discovered at age eight at a talent show in the Raleigh, North Carolina, suburb of Knightdale (shortly after the family moved from New Jersey), where he was cast as Tiny Tim in a local production of A Christmas Carol. His parents divorced shortly after. Muniz subsequently moved to Burbank, California, with his mother. He appeared in commercials and made his film debut in the made-for-television movie, To Dance With Olivia (1997), starring Lou Gossett Jr. The same year, he appeared in the CBS Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of What the Deaf Man Heard. A small role in the film Lost & Found (1999) led up to his breakthrough role as the title character on Malcolm in the Middle.
While on Malcolm he did guest shots on TV and lead roles in youth comedies, including Big Fat Liar (2002, starring Paul Giamatti) and Agent Cody Banks (2003, with Hilary Duff). A perennial Teen Choice Award nominee, Muniz moved into professional auto racing as he got older. He signed on with Jensen Motorsport as a driver in 2005 and raced in the Formula BMW USA series (2006) and the Champ Car Atlantic series (2007), claiming he was more interested in driving than acting. Muniz's feature films include My Dog Skip (2000, with Kevin Bacon), Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London (2004) and Stay Alive (2006).
While shooting the horror film Stay Alive in New Orleans, 19 year-old Muniz made headlines when he announced his engagement to his girlfriend, identified only as "Jamie."
