Mulroney's ancestors immigrated from County Donegal and County Mayo in Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine; he is of mostly Irish descent, although one of his grandmothers was German American. Mulroney attended Maury Elementary School and played cello in school and city youth orchestras, as well as acting in children's community theater. Mulroney attended the Interlochen Arts Camp as a cellist. He later attended T. C. Williams High School (grad. 1981), the high school portrayed in Remember the Titans, as well as Northwestern University (grad. 1985) in Evanston, Illinois, where he was a member of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.
Mulroney's movie debut came in Shattered If Your Kid's On Drugs in 1986, though his best known roles are probably those stemming from western movies, usually as some form of gunman or villain. Probably his best two known of these movies are 1988's Young Guns, where he co-starred alongside Emilio Estevez, and in 1994 in The Last outlaw alongside Mickey Rourke. He's also become known for his roles in romantic comedies and is something of a heartthrob thanks to his looks his best amongst these movies is probably My Best Friend's Wedding, where he appeared alongside Cameron Diaz and Julia Roberts.
Mulroney managed to find love while on the set when, in 1987, he was appearing in Survival Quest. Here he met actress Catherine Keener who has appeared in a number of films, including Being John Malkovich, The Interpreter, 8mm and Hamlet 2 and the two started dating and, not love after, got married. They had one son together named Clyde. Despite 17 years of marriage, however, the pair split up in 2005 and finalized their divorce in 2007. He has since been linked with Tharita Catulle, and the pair are expecting a child.
Mulroney is also a television actor on occasion, with appearances in live action and animated features. He appeared in Friends in one episode, for example, acting as a one-time boyfriend for Rachel, and in 2007 he voiced the Green Lantern in an episode of The Batman.
Mulroney is also an accomplished musician. He has played a cello for years, even appeared with Boyd Tinsley while opening for Alanis Morissette in Hollywood. He plays for a band called The Cranky George Trio. Mulroney, along with brother Kieran, were originally members of a punk band called Low and Sweet Orchestra, though both have since moved on with James Fearnley.
His music has appeared in movies, as well, including Mission: Impossible III and The Thing Called Love. Mulroney has been known to lend his voice to radio, as well, appearing on the Chicago show "The American Life" to read stories.
