This six foot two, blue eyed model has recently risen to prosperity in the modeling career after being signed with Public Image Worldwide in 2006. However, he first signed with the London modeling agency, Select, in 2001.
In fact, it was his friends that entered his picture into his first modeling competition. Although David had graduated with a degree in marketing, he was working for a car magazine as a delivery driver at the time, but when he won the contest and signed with Select he promptly quit that position and started modelling for catalogues. This type of modelling was working to help him get the bills paid, but it wasn’t succeeding in getting him the fame and attention that you need to get your name known in the fashion industry. The main problem that Gandy seemed to encounter was the fact that he was very muscular and most of the models being used during this time were very thin and angular. Although he was definitely a fresh face, it was not one that was being well recognized.
Gandy’s introduction to Dolce & Gabbana
After signing with Public Image Worldwide five years later in 2006 David Gandy found himself the centre of attention as he soon was approached to walk in the spring show for Dolce & Gabbana in Milan. This show is what led to Gandy’s fame as it caused Dolce & Gabbana to choose him as their male model for the Light Blue fragrance campaign. These videos succeeded in jump starting his career where years of catalogue modelling had failed. This 2007 ad featured a barely clad David Gandy floating on a boat in the sea kissing a female model. This commercial was one that caused hordes of fans to sit up and take notice of Gandy, especially when he had a fifty foot billboard of himself in an underwear campaign up in Times Square, New York City.
After the campaign David Gandy found himself working to advertise the Carolina Herrera fragrance, Aqua. He also walked in another Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan in January of 2007. This led to him being featured in magazines like Fashion, Inc., L’Optimum, VMan, and Harper’s Bazaar all in 2007. Not to mention that during that year he also appeared in specific ad campaigns for Zara, Ermengildo Zegna, and Stefanel with supermodel Gisele Bundchen.
In 2008 David Gandy continued his upward spiral by renewing his contract with Dolce & Gabbana. This led to him being featured in a company calendar and walking in two different Dolce & Gabbana shows during the year. However, Gandy was also honoured by being featured in VMan when they interviewed him about his life outside of modelling. He was also in an editorial in the Spanish version of Glamour. In 2009 Gandy received one of the highest honours when he was named as the world’s third top male model. With a career that has reached such a pinnacle in such a relatively short period of time it is no wonder that David Gandy has taken the world by storm, and it is unlikely that his star will burn out any time in the near future. However, Gandy has been asked about the possibility that he might make the transition to acting, but he maintains that he does not want to do this unless he knows that he has talent first. He insists that he enjoys modelling right now, and he is going to stay on this career path for awhile longer.
