Monteith was born in Calgary, Alberta, and raised in Victoria, British Columbia. He has one older brother, Shaun. His parents divorced when he was seven, and he was raised by his mother, Ann McGregor, an interior decorator (his father was in the military). By 13, Monteith once a promising student who at age 5 could read at a fourth-grade level dropped out of school. Monteith estimates that by the age of 16, when he quit for good, he had attended 12 different schools, including alternative programs for troubled teens. He went drinking with his friends and had a drug addiction. Monteith went to rehab at the age of 19 and was finally given an ultimatum by his family to get clean or get turned over to the police for theft charges, after he stole a significant amount of money from a family member. "I was done fighting myself", he said. "I finally said, 'I'm gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I'm doing this.' "
Before becoming an actor, he worked various jobs, such as a Wal-Mart people greeter, a taxicab driver, school bus driver, and roofer.
He received his high school diploma in 2011 from an alternative school he attended in Victoria, British Columbia.
Cory was found dead on July 13, 2013 at his home in Vancouver, Canada. He described himself on his personal Twitter page as a "tall, awkward, Canadian, actor, drummer, person." Moved from Calgary to Victoria at age 2 after his parents divorced. Dropped out of school at 16 after attended 16 different schools, and worked at many jobs before he notched his first professional acting roles in his early 20s.
Cory was of Scottish ancestry.
A never-before-heard "Glee" recording has been released from its vault of unaired music, and it might bring tears to your eyes. The show had intended to include this performance of "Seasons of Love" in its third season finale, but it didn't make the cut.
"Glee" used the song "Seasons of Love" in a tribute to the late Cory Monteith !
