Born and raised in South Africa, Dean and her costars made headlines in May 2022 when Triangle of Sadness received an eight-minute standing ovation at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival before winning the festival’s top prize, Palme d'Or.
In her modeling career, Dean most recently appeared in a new Madewell campaign titled “When the Fit Hits,” an effort to showcase actors in their "breakout moments." The campaign went public just a week before her sudden death.
In October 2008, Dean and fellow model Ashton Schnehage survived a car crash. She was hospitalized at Milnerton Medi-Clinic and received life-saving surgery, the scars from which she later sported at an AMI Alexandre Mattiussi fashion show. Her injuries includes a broken wrist, four broken ribs and a collapsed lung. She took a break from her career after the accident.
In 2010, Dean made her acting debut in the film adaptation of Spud as Amanda, a role she would reprise in the sequel Spud 2: The Madness Continues. She went on to star in the films Don't Sleep in 2017 and An Interview with God in 2018. During the same year, she landed the role of Syonide, a recurring character she played for two seasons of the DC Universe series Black Lightning.
