Dombrowski's career
Just about every season provides an unexpected surprise, and 2009 was no exception as Brandyn Dombrowski proved to be that special player. Projected early on to spend a second-consecutive season on the practice squad and maybe see some limited time on the active roster, Dombrowski impressed coaches so much with his work in camp that the team felt comfortable enough to release a couple of veterans and keep him on the active roster.
That decision paid immediate dividends during the season-opener at Oakland when both center Nick Hardwick and guard Louis Vasquez went down with injuries. Dombrowski was pressed into duty and he was on the field for the team’s fourth-quarter game-winning drive.
That first game proved to be just the beginning for Dombrowski. He started the next two games at right guard for Vasquez and then spent time on special teams and as a reserve lineman. Then Jeromey Clary suffered an ankle injury late in the season, and without skipping a beat, Dombrowski was there as a replacement. He started the final seven games, including the playoffs, and was a valuable addition to the offensive line as the Chargers closed out the regular season with 11 straight wins.
Dombrowski proved the coaches made the right decision by keeping him on the active roster. Don’t be surprised to see him compete for even more playing time in 2010.
Dombrowski’s father, Ken, is a former defensive tackle who played for the the Hamilton Tiger Cats and Calgary Stampeders in the CFL and the USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers.
