Seeing how her sister loved and admired the movie's main character, Ewan McGregor, Macdonald wrote a piece called "The Wall" that chronicles the infatuation for another being. This routine of spawning her own materials kept flowing until she was 'discovered' during a school extra session. When she was in her third year of the high school, a group of musicians naming themselves Impact Arts came to scout talents and improve those with interest in music. Macdonald, having mastered her guitar skill for sometime and even written her own songs, stood out in the crowd and was quickly promoted. At 15 she performed a lot of acoustic sessions, mainly covering songs from the bands she likes such as R.E.M., and Tears for Fears. One gig leads to another, she was starting to get her career on track.
After leaving school due to acceptance in two universities, Macdonald took her time to concentrate on her creative side. She called a year off the education pursue to write songs and record a demo. It was during this period that she wrote the track "This is the Life", a tense piece resulting from a night gathering with her friends. Her demo tapes were then sent to several record labels that advertised themselves on the back of NME magazine. It was Melodramatic Records that took the bait and polished the young singer to be more prepared for the industry. The label's owner Pete Wilkinson helped her to create a demo that has better quality in sound, an effort proved worthy when she was signed to Vertigo, home to The Killers, Noisettes and Razorlight.
Under the recording house's wings, Macdonald entered the studio to publish her first album. She took a major part in the songwriting of the album mainly because she had been inspired by many things in her life leading to the record deal. "Poison Prince" was released as the first single followed by the more successful "Mr. Rock and Roll". Both singles helped the debut effort, "This is the Life", to reach success in her home country upon its release in July 2007 as well as in U.K. in the same month. Touring relentlessly, including meeting her idols, Macdonald looked forward to conquer the American market by releasing "Mr. Rock and Roll" as the first single of the U.S. album edition which will be released on August 26, 2008.
